The U.S. women’s national team received major news on Monday involving one of its top prospects.
Lily Yohannes has committed her international future to the USWNT, the 17-year-old announced on social media Monday. Yohannes, who was eligible to represent the Netherlands, has decided to represent her birth country.
Born in Springfield, Virginia, Yohannes moved to the Netherlands when she was 10-years-old. After coming up through the Ajax youth academy, the young midfielder made her senior debut for Ajax in 2023, becoming the youngest American to play in the UEFA W Champions League.
Yohannes has scored seven goals in 24 first team appearances for Ajax, helping the Dutch club win the KNVB Women’s Cup and finish second in the Eredivisie table.
After featuring in both U.S. and Dutch youth national team camps, Yohannes made her senior USWNT debut last June against South Korea, scoring 10 minutes after coming onto the pitch.
Yohannes is a bright talent to watch in the future in Emma Hayes’ squad. The USWNT will close their 2024 schedule with road friendlies against England on Nov. 30 and the Netherlands on Dec. 3.
