Erik ten Hag opted against advice over left-back to complete Sergio Reguilon transfer

Erik ten Hag chose experience over development in an effort to solve Manchester United's left back crisis during the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils boss had a chaotic end to the summer market, securing the late arrivals of Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon on loan.

Beginning the summer with left-back one position that seemed relatively set in stone, things suddenly changed with injuries to first and second choice options Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The Athletic claim an emergency shortlist was drawn up which included Nicolas Tagliafico, Marcos Alonso and Marc Cucurella, only for the club to end up with Reguilon from Tottenham.

However, other figures in the club had different ideas, thinking youngster Alvaro Fernandez was 'worth trying'.

The 20-year-old Spaniard impressed on loan at Preston North End last season, being named their young player of the year, but that wasn't enough for Ten Hag.

Fernandez’s loan to Granada was close to being called off in the wake of Shaw's injury, but after the club secured Reguilon for the season, the youngster was allowed to move to LaLiga.

Reguilon and Amrabat were the final arrivals of a summer that also saw Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Jonny Evans and Altay Bayindir also join.

So far this season, United have a record of two wins and two defeats, with Shaw being replaced by Diogo Dalot after a loss to Tottenham.
