'If we don't qualify for 2026 World Cup, I'll resign' – new Tunisia coach

Tunisia's newly appointed head coach, Sami Trabelsi, has pledged to step down if the team doesn’t qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

The Tunisian tactician recently took charge of the Carthage Eagles – replacing Faouzi Benzarti who left the position in October and Kais Yaâkoubi was appointed as interim coach.

Tunisia are currently at the top of Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with 10 points after four rounds, a record of three wins and a draw.

“I will strive with the entire technical team to achieve what we hope for,” Trabelsi said on CAF Online.

“The first objective of my contract with the Tunisian Football Federation is to qualify the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and if we do not achieve this goal, I will immediately leave my position without hesitation."

Trabelsi will already have to get to work as two matches await him in March against Liberia and Malawi, matches of the fifth and sixth days of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Carthage Eagles qualified for the last two World Cups – competing in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.
