In a thrilling round of Nedbank Cup Last 16 matches, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs all secured their spots in the quarterfinals with commanding performances.
Sundowns continued their impressive form by dispatching lower-league outfit Mpheni Home Defenders 2-0 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
Tashreeq Matthews and Bathusi Aubaas were the goal scorers, ensuring the Brazilians’ smooth progression.
Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates also made their mark in the competition. Chiefs cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Chippa United at the FNB Stadium, while Pirates dominated Baroka with a 3-1 win at the Orlando Stadium.
Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi was particularly impressed with midfielder Pule Mmodi’s performance, offering high praise for the player’s contribution.
“Mmodi, what he does on the field, it’s incredible,” said Nabi.
“Sometimes you look at one or two opportunities that he has missed. But he’s a winger. His first attribute is to score goals.
“Maybe he should have scored easy opportunities that he has gotten. But for me, he was the best player on the field [against Chippa],” he added.
The tournament continued to showcase exciting football, with SuperSport United defeating Cape Town Spurs 2-1, Stellenbosch overcoming Polowane City, and Durban City causing an upset by beating TS Galaxy.
In a surprising turn of events, AmaZulu were eliminated after a narrow 1-0 loss to Marumo Gallants, falling short of repeating their previous tournament’s impressive run.
