OFFICIAL: Zamalek unveil Peseiro as new head coach

Egyptian giants Zamalek have unveiled Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro as their new head coach.

The 64-year-old takes over from Swiss manager Christian Gross, just a week before the Cairo grand derby against Al Ahly.

Peseiro, who has been unattached since he left his position as Nigeria’s head coach in March 2024, signed a one-and-a-half-year contract as Zamalek's new coach.

“Happy, honoured to represent Zamalek! And with a lot of ambition,” Peseiro said.

“The work has already begun and this is where all our focus and dedication lies. Making the fans proud is what we want.”

After retiring as a professional footballer in 1994, Peseiro went on to coach several clubs in his country, including Sporting CP – which he took to the 2005 UEFA Cup final, and also served as Real Madrid’s assistant manager.

The former SC Braga head coach also worked extensively in Arab nations, being in charge of the Saudi Arabia national team, and also finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.
