Nottingham Forest to sign trickster compared to Lionel Messi but the deal has a twist - journalist

Nottingham Forest are going to be on the lookout for a player or two this month with the January transfer window now open for business in the Premier League.
A striker might be the order of the day. Forest were linked with Igor Jesus earlier this month and the Botafogo striker is being looked at by a number of clubs in England this month.
Mathys Tel was also an option for Forest. He was praised by Bayern Munich star Harry Kane after breaking into the team but he’s likely to stay in Germany to leave the Reds disappointed.
It looks as though attacking players are the order of the day for Nuno Espirito Santo this month. Douglas Luiz was linked to Forest but bigger clubs are now in the race to complete that particular deal.
Nottingham Forest to sign Marcus Edwards
The Reds are prioritising a striker but it would appear that a winger is on the agenda for Forest too – although this deal does have an intriguing twist involved.
According to a Turkish journalist, Oguz Oruc, Forest have agreed a deal to sign Marcus Edwards from Sporting CP but he will head to Olympiacos on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Edwards is a left-footed winger who has become surplus to requirements in Portugal, starting just once in the league this season and scoring three goals in all competitions.
It’s claimed that Edwards has been swayed by the fact that he will eventually return to the Premier League. The 26-year-old came through the ranks at Tottenham but left for Vitoria after just a single senior appearance.
What Mauricio Pochettino said about Marcus Edwards
The former Tottenham manager didn’t hold back when discussing Edwards previously. His talent was discussed after the winger gave Spurs a glimpse of what they were missing when he came up against them in the Champions League.
Peter Crouch said after a 2-0 win for Sporting CP: “It was almost the goal of the season. He’s been compared with Messi by Pochettino – and now we can absolutely see why.”
It perhaps feels odd that the player is going to Olympiacos first. One thing that the Reds don’t have right now is a left-footed winger and Edwards could enhance the squad in that sense.
Marcus Edwards stats for Sporting CP | Total |
Appearances | 120 |
Goals | 24 |
Assists | 26 |
Still, it feels like an exciting deal that Forest are going to complete – if the Turkish reports are to be believed and a transfer goes through before the window closes next month.
Edwards at 26 fits the profile of what sort of player Forest are looking to sign and there will be a real sense that he can make a real impact on the team when he joins next season.
