Report: Nottingham Forest now reject bid for £75,000-a-week player despite him saying he wants move to happen

Nottingham Forest have now rejected an offer from an overseas club – but are open to a sale.

Under pressure from the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, the Garibaldi have actually done a fine job when it comes to sales this summer, receiving £30m and £27m from Lyon for Orel Mangala and Moussa Niakhate respectively.

Nottingham Forest also made £3.4m from selling Remo Freuler to Bologna – as the Italian side were obligated to buy the Switzerland international after his loan spell ended.

Now, Nottingham Forest could have some more money coming the way of the City Ground

Nottingham Forest in talks to sell Jonjo Shelvey

A story from Rizeninsesi in Turkey now states that Nottingham Forest are in talks to sell Jonjo Shelvey to Çaykur Rizespor.

There was recently widespread confusion about the England international when he revealed to The Karadeniz Gazete that he hoped Nottingham Forest and Çaykur Rizespor could come to an agreement over a permanent deal – despite the Guardian finding out that the Reds actually terminated the midfielder’s contract instead of loaning him to the Turkish side.

Shelvey said: “My heart is in favour of staying here, but this does not happen by my will. The two clubs need to reach an agreement. There is no reason why there cannot be a deal. Hopefully, good news will come in the coming days.”

Now, there has been an update.

Rizeninsesi believe Çaykur Rizespor have asked Nottingham Forest if they can sign Shelvey on loan again, although those at the City Ground replied by saying they want a permanent sale.

The Super Lig side then offered €4m (£3.4m) in a bid to sign the 32-year-old permanently, but Nottingham Forest have counter offered that move by requesting €6m (£5m).

That is – of course – not a huge gap, so we would expect the two clubs to reach an agreement soon.

Sale must happen

If Çaykur Rizespor stand firm on their £3.4m offer and fail to make an improved bid, Nottingham Forest would be wise to just back down and accept it.

Shelvey is currently making £75,000-a-week at the City Ground, which Spotrac believe puts him just £5,000 behind Nottingham Forest’s highest earners, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Morgan Gibbs-White.

The attacking duo receive £80,000-a-week each.

Therefore, Nottingham Forest have to get Shelvey’s wages off the books as soon as possible – that is a huge amount to pay a fringe player who is highly unlikely to feature under Nuno Espirito Santo next season.
