£30m Arsenal target's transfer has collapsed, door open for Edu - our view

Even with Eddie Nketiah getting the number 14 shirt and signing a new contract at Arsenal, Edu and Mikel Arteta will need a lot more firepower this summer.

The Gunners will be back in the Europa League next season and with Nketiah being their only senior striker, Arteta will need at least two more strikers.

Speculation is rife that Arsenal will be pipping Tottenham Hotspur to the £50 million signing of Gabriel Jesus.

But is that enough? Well considering he only eight Premier League goals in 28 appearances this past season, probably not.

Hugo Ekitike is someone who the North Londoners were linked to earlier in the window and maybe, just maybe, the door is back open for Edu to get him.

Maguire Makes The MOST Overpriced Premier League XI

Newcastle-based The Chronicle reported Arsenal’s interest this summer but the player looked to be joining Eddie Howe’s outfit at St James’s Park for a long time.

However, 90 MIn reported this morning that a £30 million transfer to Tyneside has now collapsed and that could, in theory, allow Arsenal back into the race.

The Gunners and Newcastle seem to have been two of the most-linked clubs to the 19-year-old Reims marksman – compared to Kylian Mbappe – before the Magpies then seemingly stole a march on their London counterparts.

But with Howe’s troops out of the running now, it would make sense for Arsenal – if they’re genuinely interested – to step up their efforts from here on in.

Nketiah and Jesus isn’t enough.

Edu needs to sign another number nine for Arteta this summer and maybe that could still be the teenage prodigy.
