Ben Chilwell purgatory: 'Chelsea transfer update after Renato Veiga news'

Ben Chilwell’s future with Chelsea is still up in the air amid transfer developments around fellow left-back Renato Veiga, according to The Guardian.

Chilwell will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this January, but despite obviously being surplus to requirements so far this season “firm interest” in the England international has yet to materialise.

The former Leicester City man has featured sparingly for the Blues under boss Enzo Maresca and it is understood that Chelsea may have to heavily-subsidise a loan away from the club, or even pay out his contract so he can leave.

Veiga has been strongly-linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund, with personal terms said to be agreed, after Chelsea rejected a bid for the Portuguese defender from Wolves.

However, with Chilwell seemingly not set for a reprieve anyway, both defenders leaving the club would mean finding a replacement to act as cover for Marc Cucurella.

Although a transfer to Dortmund for Veiga would likely represent a profit for the Blues, letting two players who play the same position go is seen as a “risk” by the hierarchy at Chelsea.

Whilst Veiga is a player who has played fairly regular minutes for the club this season, Chilwell represents the uglier side of Chelsea’s transfer policy.

Axel Disasi, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Cesare Casadei, Carney Chukwuemeka, Marc Guiu and Benoit Badiashile have all struggled for involvement at times this season, despite their quality.

Much has been made of the glutinous way that Chelsea have spent money in the past few transfer windows and whilst the club have improved off the pitch, their finances off it continue to spark concern.

Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insiderthat the Blues could have breached profit and sustainability rules, and may receive a points deduction as a result.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has barely featured since signing from Leicester City

As a result, it comes as no great surprise that Dewsbury-Hall has been linked with a move to West Ham, having only played five league games (with no starts) this season.

Chukwuemeka has also been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge as Maresca and the Blues’ board continue to try and consolidate a squad of players who are contributing on the pitch.
