'Junior Firpo explodes with rage at Leeds fan vs Sunderland'

Junior Firpo was extremely unhappy with one Leeds United fan during the 2-1 win over Sunderland on Monday, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Daniel Farke‘s players were frustrated by the Black Cats for much of the 90 minutes at Elland Road on 17 February, with Wilson Isidor’s 30th-minute goal nearly proving the difference.

Tensions had been growing throughout the Championship clash, with a defeat pushing the Whites below Sheffield United in the table, that was until Pascal Struijk and Joe Rothwell teamed up to win the game for Leeds.

The duo combined on two occasions in the final 15 minutes, with Struijk first beating Salis Abdul Samed to the ball before firing home the all-important winner in the fifth minute of added time.

Leeds were working against the clock to seal all three points in such dramatic style and some of the passion and frustration spilled out into the crowd.

Reporting via the Yorkshire Evening Post [18 February], Graham Smyth spotted the moment unfold, writing: “Firpo’s urgency exploded in a split second of rage as the ball went into the West Stand.

“It was juggled by various Leeds fans trying to get hold of it to return it, only for one to hold it a second too long for the left-back’s liking.”

Leeds are not used to losing games in the Championship, certainly not at home, having only lost two league games at Elland Road last season and currently only one loss this term.

With promotion back to the Premier League on the line, Farke’s side cannot afford to slip up, and that attitude was there for everyone to see as the minutes ticked by.

Football Insider verdict

Having already once failed to take Leeds back to the Premier League last season, missing out narrowly in the Championship play-off final, he will want to avoid a repeat this term.

The crushing blow at Wembley Stadium eventually saw Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray all leave in big-money deals, but that has not slowed the team down.

With Joel Piroe, Dan James, Brenden Aaronson, and now even Pascal Struijk chipping in with goals, the Whites have a brilliant chance to earn automatic promotion from the Championship.

Following the dramatic victory over the Black Cats, Leeds have gone back to the top of the pile, two points above Sheffield United and seven points above Burnley.

If the rest of Firpo’s teammates show the same energy and tenacity as him, there will be no trouble lifting the Championship title at the end of the season.
