Neil Warnock once started a right-back up front after his wife ‘dreamt he would score the winner’ – and he ended up netting six-minute perfect hat-tri

Neil Warnock once started a right-back up front after the idea came to his wife in a dream, and was rewarded with a perfect hat-trick. talkSPORT host Darren Ambrose recalled the astonishing story from his Crystal Palace days which will go down in folklore, with defender Danny Butterfield only managing 14 goals in his 569-game career. Butterfield became a master poacher for one game onlyGetty Warnock’s call was absolutely inspired Amazingly though, 21 per cent of his career efforts came in a single match thanks to Warnock’s astonishing call while at Selhurst Park, securing a 3-1 win over Wolves in the FA Cup. Ambrose played the 90 minutes on that day and, despite beginning the match absolutely baffled by his manager’s decision, he was equally stunned to see it pay off. Discussing Warnock on talkSPORT Breakfast, Ambrose said: “Apart from Sir Bobby, he was my favourite manager, honestly, such a great guy. “I was known as the son of [Warnock] I’ve got many stories. Him cutting my toenails… he was a qualified chiropodist!” But, delving into his favourite anecdote, Ambrose said: “We got a draw away at Wolves and he came in and said, ‘My wife Sharon, she had a dream last night,’ no one really laughed because that was what he was like. “He said, ‘She dreamt that my right-back scores the winning goal today’, So he said, ‘Danny Butterfield, you’re playing up front’. I was taking kick-off with him and I was looking over to the bench thinking, ‘Gaffer is this a joke? Put him back to right-back’. “I think about 12 minutes later he had a perfect hat-trick, Butterfield. We won 3-1. Left foot, right foot, header – every team talk after that all the fringe players were saying, ‘Gaffer has Sharon had a dream last night? Am I in the team, am I going to score?’ “The guy was insane. Old school. If it was raining he’d bring his umbrella in and pull me aside, always the Gaffer’s son.” However, it appears that rather than Warnock being mad, his wife seemingly had a spooky gift, as it turns out that wasn’t the only time her dreams came true on the football pitch. Former Millwall and Sheffield United winger Paul Ifill also got in touch with talkSPORT about when the same thing happened during Warnock’s reign at Bramall Lane, on the eve of the Sheffield derby against Wednesday, no less. That’s quite the stage to take another chance at your wife’s apparent clairvoyance but, again, it worked. “Been telling people about his wife’s dreams for years,” he wrote on Twitter. I was going to go in on the Monday to have a moan up, but his missus had nailed it! “I just had to eat my s*** sandwich!” Spooky, indeed.
