Report: £45m star is asking his club to let him leave after rejected Arsenal bids
Arsenal are targeting Lisandro Martinez and the Ajax defender has met with his club to reiterate his desire to leave the club this summer.
The Gunners want to add a left-sided centre back this summer in order to bolster Mikel Arteta’s options at the back.
Gabriel Magalhaes and Kieran Tierney are quality defenders but they need competition at left-sided centre back and left back respectively.
Pablo Mari and Nuno Tavares just aren’t cut out for those roles in the Premier League and Arsenal may now want one player to fill both roles.
Arsenal are targeting Lisandro Martinez
The top target appears to be Martinez, who won Ajax’s Player of the Year award last season.
Arsenal have now lodged two bids for Martinez, the latter of which hit the £34million mark last week.
Further talks have been planned for this week as Arsenal continue to chase the Argentinian defender.
Capable of playing at centre back, left back and even in holding midfield, Martinez has the versatility that Arsenal are seeking.
The 24-year-old isn’t the biggest defender at 5ft 9in tall, but his composure, reading of the game and ability to pass out from the back make him hugely appealing.
The problem for Arsenal is that Manchester United – managed by former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag – also want Martinez and are allegedly confident of signing him for £39million.
Whilst Arsenal and United battle over Martinez, the defender has made his position very clear.
The Mirror claim that Martinez has, for the second time in a week, told Ajax that he wants to leave this summer.
Martinez is pleading with Ajax to let him go but the Dutch giants are firmly demanding £45million – a figure neither Arsenal or United have got close to yet.
It’s a boost for Arsenal that Martinez is seemingly ready to push for a move to England but with United keen and Ajax standing firm, there could be twists and turns to come yet.
