Report: Arsenal make offer for £12.5m Tottenham and Tuchel target in last few 'hours'
Italian outlet Firenze Viola claim Arsenal and Sevilla have made offers “in the last few hours” for Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic – who is also a target for Tottenham and Chelsea, but it has been rejected by the player himself.
Milenkovic, 24, has entered the final 12 months of his contract at La Viola. A player that has become a mainstay at Fiorentina since joining the club in 2017, clocking up 171 appearances in his five seasons with the Serie A side.
Deemed a future captain, Milenkovic sees himself remaining at Fiorentina despite his current contract. Reports earlier this summer suggested that Tottenham and Chelsea are keen, with a fee of £12.5million enough to tempt Fiorentina.
Arsenal and Sevilla have made offers but it appears that Milenkovic wants to stay with his current side. It means that he will have to sign a new deal, but the 37-time Serbia international is more than likely to stay put this summer.
Arsenal and Sevilla have made Milenkovic offers
The question is, do the Gunners really need a centre-back? They have four solid options. William Saliba has returned to the club after a stunning loan at Marseille, and impressed on debut last Friday. Alan Shearer was very impressed.
Ben White remains first choice, as does Brazilian defender Gabriel. Takehiro Tomiyasu can play in the middle, Kieran Tierney too. Rob Holding will act as cover and is likely to feature in the Europa League and other Cup competitions.
So, do Arsenal need Milenkovic? Probably not. But he is a top defender and is arguably an improvement on at least Holding, and perhaps Saliba. But bringing him to The Emirates will only stunt the growth of the Frenchman.
Arsenal are well-stocked at centre-back and if they are to make more signings this summer, centre-back is not a priority. For Sevilla, Tottenham and Chelsea, it is a different story – with depth at centre-back needed.
