Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has had a difficult season so far due to an ongoing knee issue which has restricted his availability to Mikel Arteta.

The 26-year-old has only featured once this season during Arsenal's victory against Southampton in the Premier League back in October.

The Gunners have continued to push to try and win the Premier League without him, and the club currently sit in second place and seven points behind Liverpool.

However, Arteta has been without the Japan international which has impacted his defensive options.

The Gunners have remained strong defensively and boast the second best record in the Premier League, having only conceded 22 times in 25 games.

Arsenal are currently gearing up for two important Premier League fixtures as they face West Ham on Saturday (22 February) before playing against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday (26 February).

Takehiro Tomiyasu reveals new Arsenal setback

Tomiyasu has updated fans about his ongoing injury via Instagram, confirming that he has now undergone surgery to try and fix the issue.

He said, "I've had a surgery on my knee [a] few days ago, and I've already started my rehab to do what I love the most again.

"It has been the toughest period in my career for sure and it carries on a bit more but I won't give up. Thank you for your support and see you again."

Tomiyasu joins Arsenal's growing injury list

Tomiyasu might have been unavailable for most of this campaign, but Arsenal have now confirmed that he will be out for the entire season after his surgery.

It's the latest in a series of injury blows that Arteta is having to deal with as Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are also out of action for the remainder of the campaign.

On top of that, Arsenal are without Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Ben White, who are all also on the sidelines dealing with respective injuries.
