Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony has suggestedBurnley had eyes on a winter move for Kwame Poku before his injury.
Burnley were active in the winter transfer window as they looked to strengthen their squad for the Championship promotion push.
Five new signings were made with Oliver Sonne, Jaydon Banel, Jonjo Shelvey and Ashley Barnes coming in on permanent deals. Marcus Edwards has signed on an initial loan but that could become full-time in the summer transfer window.
The Clarets will be hoping those additions provide enough to help get them over the line in a bid for a Premier League return, but it seems one player they had lined up before injury struck was Kwame Poku.
Speaking on his podcast, ‘The Hard Truth’ (as quoted by the Peterborough Telegraph), Peterborough United owner and chairman Darragh MacAnthony has suggested Burnley were eyeing a January bid for star winger Poku before a hamstring injury ruled him out for the long-term.
An unnamed Championship club made a late offer amounting to £6m for Poku, but it was thrown out by the Posh. MacAnthony revealed:
“We also had a good offer for Kwame of £3m plus £3m in add-ons from a Championship club about 45 minutes before the deadline. Why they left it so late I don’t know, but we were only selling him if he was loaned straight back.
“The club were being clever though as they know 20 clubs will be trying to sign him in the summer so they were trying to get ahead.
“There would have been a lot more interest in Kwame if he hadn’t picked up his injury. When he was fit and playing a team like Burnley planned to make an offer in January, but they needed someone who was playing.”
