Liverpool have just dropped clear hint that three academy youngsters are set to play vs Plymouth - journalist

Liverpool are set to rotate their starting XI for Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Plymouth Argyle.

The Reds will be keen to progress in another domestic competition after reaching the final of the Carabao Cup on Thursday.

However, given that Liverpool meet Everton in the Premier League on Wednesday, Arne Slot is bound to have more than half an eye on that game.

As a result, Slot is likely to give some more fringe members of the Liverpool squad game time against the Championship side.

The Reds should not underestimate Plymouth, although given that they are bottom of the second division, Liverpool are heavy favourites to progress no matter the team they send out.

While this will hopefully see the likes of Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo get extended minutes, journalist Lewis Steele says Liverpool dropped a hint on Saturday that some younger players could also feature.

Young Liverpool trio set for FA Cup action

As shown in their recent valiant defeat against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, Liverpool’s youngsters are well up for the fight if needed this season.

Two players who featured during that game were Trey Nyoni and James McConnell.

McConnell stood out in Eindhoven, with Slot praising the midfielder after the game. Meanwhile, Nyoni came off the bench with around half an hour to go.

And according to Steele, neither Nyoni nor McConnell were involved with the U18s or U21s on Saturday, meaning they are likely to play some part at Plymouth.

Steele also noted the absence of exciting winger Rio Ngumoha. Ngumoha made his senior debut in the last round against Accrington Stanley and it seems he’s set to travel with the squad again.

“No Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha for the U21s or U18s this weekend, hinting they will be part of the travelling squad to Plymouth tomorrow,” says Steele. “Same goes for James McConnell.”

Will any the trio start for Liverpool?

Given how highly Slot rates Nyoni, McConnell and Ngumoha, it should not be a surprise that they are in his thinking for the FA Cup.

What would be more of a shock is if either Nyoni or Ngumoha start at Home Park.

For McConnell, the expectation should be different. He began the game with PSV and with Tyler Morton injured for a while, the 20-year-old has been promoted within the squad,.

Slot may still go with other options. But Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are all virtually certain to be rested. That leaves the door open for McConnell.

If he can do well again, it certainly won’t be the last time the former Sunderland prospect is with the first-team this season. As for the two teenagers, their futures are equally as bright.
