Report: Celtic make first move to sign £4m Premier League ace
Celtic want Ben Davies again and have made contact to try and sign the Liverpool defender this summer – but face a battle with Middlesbrough.
Celtic have signed one centre back this summer with Cameron Carter-Vickers signing a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Bhoys may still want more defensive additions though with Nir Bitton – sometimes a makeshift centre back – leaving this summer.
Add in that Liam Scales has moved on to Aberdeen and a left-sided centre back may become a prime target for Celtic this summer.
Celtic want Ben Davies again
A familiar name is now being linked with a move to Parkhead with Ben Davies once again on the radar.
The Liverpool Echo report that Celtic and Middlesbrough have both made contact with Liverpool over a potential deal for Davies.
It’s suggested that neither side has actually made a cash bid yet but Liverpool are seeking around £4million for Davies.
That would be a nice profit on the bargain fee Liverpool paid to sign Davies from Preston back in January 2021.
Davies was highly-rated at Preston but was inside the final six months of his contract, so Liverpool landed an absolute bargain.
Yet Davies hasn’t actually made his first-team debut for Liverpool and spent last season on loan at Sheffield United in the Championship.
Davies returns to Liverpool this summer with his future up in the air, seemingly having no chance of breaking into the Liverpool setup.
That means a permanent exit now seems likely and it’s no shock that Celtic are keen once again.
Celtic opened talks with Preston in January 2021 and were desperate to add Davies immediately having discussed a pre-contract agreement.
Yet when Liverpool suddenly entered the race before the transfer deadline, Davies understandably chose a move to Anfield.
Celtic have remained interest in Davies and could finally lure him to Glasgow after all as competition for Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt.
