Nottingham Forest "expected" to complete first Jan signing, it's great news for Cooper - opinion
What’s the latest?
According to journalist Konstantinos Lianos, Nottingham Forest are now “expected” to complete their first signing of the January transfer window.
“Palmeiras star Gustavo Scarpa is on his way to England to sign with Nottingham Forest. Scarpa is expected to sign a three-and-a-half-year contract that will cost almost £5m per year. The attacking midfielder will be announced at the weekend after his medical.”
Great news for Cooper
There is no doubt that the addition of the Palmeiras attacker to Trentside in January is great news for Steve Cooper, as the talented goal machine could be a huge asset to the Tricky Trees over the second half of the Premier League season.
Over 35 Brasileiro Serie A appearances this season, Scarpa scored seven goals, delivered 12 assists and created a whopping 16 chances, as well as averaging 3.4 key passes, 3.3 shots at goal and winning 3.9 duels per game – proving that he has been a consistent attacking threat for Palmeiras.
The versatile attacking midfielder is also capable of playing multiple positions, with a wealth of experience on both the left and right flank of midfield, but has predominantly occupied the most advanced central midfield role behind the striker.
Not only that, FBref rank Scarpa in the top 5% of his positional peers in the ‘next eight’ professional leagues for shot-creating actions, shots on goal and assists over the last 365 days.
Indeed, Nottingham Forest have not had the best start to their recent return to the top flight spending the majority of their campaign inside the relegation zone so far and only Wolverhampton Wanderers have scored fewer goals than the Garibaldi, so a boost to the goal contributions and creativity in the final third is desperately needed.
With that being said, the signing of Scarpa will be a great piece of business for Forest in their pursuit to retain their Premier League status at the end of the season, especially if he can continue his phenomenal form when he gets the opportunity to feature in the team over the second half of the campaign.
