Rangers-linked international opts for Celtic move as rivals swoop and Gers move elsewhere

Heading into the summer all the talk has been about Rangers and goalkeepers with Swiss international Benjamin Siegrist one of several names linked in the press. But as Rangers opt to tie down legendary stopper Allan McGregor on a deal that will take him into his 42nd year, the ex-Dundee United keeper has arrived at Celtic. #SiegristSigns! We are delighted to announce the signing of Swiss Goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist on a four-year contract! Welcome to #CelticFC, Ben! — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) June 21, 2022 The Parkhead club have moved to sign the 30-year-old goalkeeper on a budget free transfer four-year deal after his contract expired at Tannadice. Considered one of the best-of-the-rest in Scottish football, Rangers had also been linked with a move for Benjamin Siegrist but it is not clear if this interest was ever made official. These links originated into the ordinarily reputable Daily Mail sports section. In fact, it remains remarkably unlikely this was the case given that Allan McGregor contract with Rangers heading into the new season with the Scottish veteran and Jon McLaughlin as strong options between the sticks. But now, after months of conjecture regarding a potential change in the position, it will very much be business as usual at Ibrox unless there is a substantial change in the coming weeks. Reserve stopper Andy Firth, who spent part of last season on loan at Partick Thistle, has left the club whilst there remains some conjecture surrounding Robby McCrorie. There have been reports suggesting that the 24-year-old former Scotland youth international is now eyeing the Ibrox exit door after the deal for McGregor was announced. Benjamin Siegrist is one of several names who’d been linked to Rangers heading into the summer but now the stopper will line up with Old Firm rivals Celtic from next season. Speaking of Rangers’ transfer business, the Ibrox club have also been linked with a move for a Croatian international midfielder once tailed by Chelsea.
