£2.5 million Croatia international Antonio Colak would be a ‘huge success’ if he swaps PAOK for Scottish Premiership giants Rangers this summer, former Malmo ace Daniel Larsson tells the Daily Record.

Four years ago, Rangers snapped up Borna Barisic from NK Osijek after the left-back shone against Steven Gerrard’s side in Europa League qualifying. There are certainly similarities between the Barisic deal and the one that could see Colak join him at Ibrox – and not just because both players represent Croatia at international level.

It was the German-born centre-forward who drove a dagger into the hearts of Rangers’ Champions League hopes 10 months ago at the qualifying stage.

After locating the bottom corner with laser-like precision from the tightest of angles, Colak then turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, bamboozling Leon Balogun and Allan McGregor with a wonderful piece of skill that showcased not only his finishing ability but also his unpredictability and intelligence inside the penalty area.

Rangers bid £1.5m for PAOK striker Antonio Colak

“It would be a huge move for Antonio to sign for Rangers,” Larsson says after the Glasgow giants submitted an opening bid of £1.5 million for a man who scored 22 times during an excellent loan spell in Sweden.

“This would be a big step to a massive club. If I was him, and the chance was there, then I’d be very happy if a club like Rangers showed an interest.

“You can’t really go that much higher than a club which showed their size last season by reaching the Europa League final. It’s a big step and a huge compliment.”

It is understood that parent club PAOK want around £2 million for Colak. A valuation that Rangers would surely have no problem reaching. Particularly if Alfredo Morelos leaves for a new adventure in Seville.

‘Would be a huge success’

“I know what he’s capable of and he’s scored goals throughout his career at a variety of clubs,” adds Larsson. “Make no mistake, he has a lot of qualities and has plenty of goals in him, that is for sure.

“You rarely see a harder worker. He is very strong inside the box. He’s also a clever link-up player and good at getting into the right positions to receive the ball.

“He’s growing as a player and he would be a huge success at Rangers, I have no doubt about that.”

The skilful 28-year-old has struggled in Turkey but that ill-fated spell at PAOK remains a rare blot on Colak’s copybook. The much-travelled forward has scored at least 19 goals in three of the last five seasons.
