'He's explosive': Club confirm they've beaten Rangers to £4m signing

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers won’t be signing Denis Bouanga with the former St Etienne star joining MLS outfit Los Angeles FC in deal worth around £4 million, as reported by MLS Soccer.

Now, it’s not quite a signing with the star power of a Gareth Bale or a Giorgio Chiellini but write off LAFC’s new ‘Designated Player’ at your peril.

This is a man who provided 15 goals and assists for a disastrous St Etienne side in the 2021/22 Ligue 1 campaign, after all. Bouanga also had interest from Anderlecht, Rangers and Champions League regulars Club Brugge before opting to embark on a new adventure on the other side of the Atlantic.

And, as LAFC’s Co-President and General Manager points out, Bouanga is a player in his ‘prime’. You can’t say that of Bale or Chiellini.

“Denis is a proven attacker in the prime of his career,” beams John Thorrington. “An excellent complement to our group.

“He is a player in high demand. And we are grateful he and his family have chosen to continue his career in LA; To help us achieve our ultimate goal of winning trophies.”

Bouanga, at around 5 million US dollars, becomes the fourth-most expensive acquisition in LAFC’s admittedly brief history. His versatility, power and eye for goal could make the 27-year-old a revelation across the pond.

“We think he’s a natural fit,” adds club chief Will Kuntz, speaking to the Los Angeles Daily News.

“He’s very dynamic, quick, explosive, fast. He works hard. The French league is a very athletic league. You’ve got some incredibly fast strong centre backs (in France). So we feel good about his ability to fit in with the group and apply pressure.

“Given where we are and the balance of our roster, what we’re trying to achieve this year and next year and beyond, getting a guy we know the floor is pretty high and you have a degree of certainty of what you’re getting was key for us.”

According to Le10 Sport, Rangers submitted an offer for Bouanga earlier in the window. And while the Gabon international will not be arriving at Ibrox, interest in another exciting wide forward will raise further questions about the future of Fashion Sakala on the blue side of Glasgow.
