Report: European leaders now want 'unbelievable' wonderkid who snubbed Arsenal & Celtic

Serie A leaders Napoli are reportedly interested in signing Scotland wonderkid Josh Doig, who snubbed Arsenal and Celtic in 2021 and made the move to Italy this summer to join Hellas Verona.

According to the Daily Record, the UEFA Champions League side are interested in signing Doig following an incredible start to life in Italy with Hellas, with the 20-year-old defender bagging two goals in nine appearances for the Verona-based club, as well as two assists.

Whilst Doig has only made five starts for Salvatore Bocchetti’s side, the former Hibernian defender has done well with the opportunities he has been given this season. And now, Napoli are keen on signing the youngster, much to the dismay of both Arsenal and Celtic.

The Scottish Mail reported in 2021 that the Hoops were chasing Doig during his time with Hibs, whilst according to the Evening Standard, Mikel Arteta’s side were chasing the defender as an understudy for Kieran Tierney before Arsenal changed tact with the left-back position in 2022.

Hailed as an ‘unbelievable’ talent by former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey, Doig’s potential as star for club and country is clear to see. And with a European leader in Napoli now keen on signing the defender, the sky could be the limit for the 20-year-old fullback.

Indeed, with Hellas sat bottom of the Serie A table, there’s already a strong chance that Napoli could move to sign Doig in the January window, with Verona themselves likely open to a sale if the right offer comes in. And a deal would be yet another blow for Arsenal and Celtic.

Not many would have predicted Napoli of all clubs to become interested in signing Doig so soon after landing in Italy, yet this seems to be the case for the Scotland international. And for Arteta and Postecoglou, the defender’s development will be seen as a missed opportunity for both managers.

After all, Doig could soon be playing for one of the best sides in Europe this season in Napoli, which will be seen by Arsenal and Celtic as a case of what could have been had they moved to sign the defender when they had the chance 18 months ago.
