Australian international Mat Ryan is set to leave Real Sociedad just one year after the goalkeeper rejected a move to Arsenal and Celtic to sign for the La Liga side.

According to Marca, the 30-year-old shot-stopper has already said his goodbyes at the Basque club with Ryan and Sociedad set to mutually agree a termination of his contract, with the keeper set to leave Spain as a free agent as the former Brighton & Hove Albion star looks for a new club ahead of the new season.

Sociedad beat both Arsenal and Celtic for Ryan’s signature last season, with both British giants reportedly interested in signing the 74-cap Australian international, however, the keeper chose a move to San Sebastien in hope of playing regular first-team football.

However, the move to Sociedad never went to play for Ryan, with the Aussie leaving the club making just nine appearances in all competitions for Imanol Alguacil’s side, three of which came in La Liga, with Alex Remiro the club’s asserted no.1 keeper.

Labelled by Gabriel Martinelli as a ‘top’ player during his brief loan spell with Arsenal in 2021, Ryan looked poised to re-join the Gunners last summer as the club’s full-time backup option to Bernd Leno, yet as we know, Mikel Arteta surprised everyone by signing Aaron Ramsdale to become the club’s new starting keeper for last season.

As for Celtic, Ange Postecoglou also remedied missing out on Ryan by signing Joe Hart, who last season played a huge role in the Hoops’ achievement of bringing the Scottish Premiership back to the green half of Glasgow, with the Australian keeper seemingly a big loser from the past 12 months.

Ryan leaving Sociedad could get his career back off the ground

Ryan was always making a risky move signing for Sociedad over Arsenal and Celtic, and the keeper’s decision this summer to leave the club proves that remaining in Britain could have been the better option for the ambitious Australian superstar, yet this summer could see the shot-stopper secure a move to get his career off the ground.

After all, Ryan is still a top keeper and one of Australia’s best players in recent memory, and with an impressive CV, the 30-year-old could secure a big move this summer once his departure from Sociedad is announced from the club later the week.
