Stoke City have reportedly reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign 19-year-old striker Liam Delap on loan for the season.

According to the Athletic, the Championship club will sign the attacker on loan for the season, with Delap joining the club that his father, Rory Delap, became a cult icon at, with the defender’s explosive throw-ins under Tony Pulis becoming the stuff of Premier League legend.

Delap has been touted as a potential departure from City for the majority of the summer, with Southampton having a reported £16m bid rejected by the Manchester giants for the teenage forward, yet it is Stoke who have now won the race to sign the promising striker on loan.

Hailed by Pep Guardiola as a ‘special’ player, Delap has the potential to become of City’s most exciting academy graduates following the breakthrough and success of Phil Foden, and this loan spell at Stoke could be the making of the England youth international.

Delap is yet to play regular senior football in his career, with the striker making just six first-team appearances for City over the past two seasons, and this move to Stoke could be exactly what the attacker needs to get his development off the ground after dominating the youth scene for the past three years.

City have seen many of their best youth players either leave on loan or depart for good this summer, yet in the case of Delap, the Manchester giants have arguably pulled off the perfect move for the 19-year-old striker, with the youngster more than ready for his first taste of senior football at a big club.

Indeed, whilst Stoke might be a surprise option for Delap, the legacy of the striker’s father at the Potters makes the Championship side the perfect environment for the attacker to develop, with fans of the club already likely to warm to the City talent for the new season.
