'I cannot understand': Ian Wright stunned by what he saw from £6m Arsenal player v Palace

A Gabriel Martinelli goal helped Arsenal to victory on Friday.

Mikel Arteta’s outfit kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win away to Crystal Palace.

Martinelli opened the scoring in the first half with a well-timed header that proved the foundations for Arsenal going on to record an opening-day victory in this competition.

However, earlier in the half he fluffed a massively gilt-edged opportunity.

Following brilliant work from compatriot and debutant Gabriel Jesus, Martinelli, a £6 million signing in 2019, dragged his effort wide of the Eagles’ post early on.

And legendary Arsenal hitman Ian Wright ‘cannot believe’ that the Brazilian attacker didn’t open his body up and use the right foot instead.

He told Premier League Productions: “Me and Michael [Owen] saw it. I couldn’t believe how it worked out. I cannot understand why he’s let that come across him on the left foot instead of going on to it with the right foot. It was one of those where I just think ‘Oh my gosh that’s the last thing you want that early’.”

It’s probably also worth remembering that Martinelli only turned 21 in June.

This is such a very young and inexperienced player and misses like these are simply a learning curb for the young South American attacker.

The next time a similiar opportunity comes his way, you’d fancy Martinelli to convert it with the sort of composure that he unfortunately lacked at Selhurst Park.
