Report: West Ham make contact to sign Tottenham & Lampard target with £340m release clause
What’s the story?
Well, the Netherlands international has asked for his contract to be terminated at the Camp Nou, following the arrivals of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
That particular contract involves a release clause worth £340m.
Now, West Ham have made contact with Depay as they ambitiously aim to bring him back to the Premier League.
The Guardian believe Barcelona need to sell players this summer in order to ease their financial problems, and are willing to grant Depay’s request to have his contract terminated.
Unfortunately for West Ham and Everton, the 28-year-old is said to want Champions League football at his next club, but despite that, the Hammers believe they have a chance of signing him regardless.
West Ham have also seen a £25m bid rejected for Matheus Nunes, with Sporting Lisbon holding out for £42m.
Talks are also ongoing with Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for Thilo Kehrer.
West Ham, Tottenham & Everton fighting for a gem
In our view, the opportunity to sign Depay on a free transfer is too good to ignore.
A player of his quality is easily worth £30m – at least – and at the age of 28, he is right in the midst of his prime years as a footballer.
With Champions League football on Depay’s mind, Spurs surely lead the race for his signature.
However, if West Ham can somehow beat their London rivals to the Barcelona No.14’s signature, it really would be a phenomenal bit of business – especially as David Moyes is light on options up front.
Keep an eye on this situation, as we highly doubt Depay will still be at Barcelona after the transfer deadline.
