'He's a bit down': West Brom man defends Tottenham star after 'disappointing' moment on weekend

West Brom midfielder Jayson Molumby has leapt to the defence of Tottenham striker Troy Parrott in quotes published by Lancs Live, after the Spurs talent missed a glaring chance for Ireland during a Nations League defeat to Scotland.

Parrott, 20, has sparkled at times during his 16 caps for Ireland. But this season, the Spurs ace has been struggling to provide Preston with a goalscoring touch. In 12 games, he has just one goal. In 10 games, Preston have scored three.

Despite his lack of goals, he was called-up to Ireland’s squad for the international break. Stephen Kenny handed Parrott a start in a crucial Nations League outing against Scotland. But he missed a golden chance, with the score at 1-1.

Breaking from a Scotland corner, Parrott is fed through on goal by Swansea’s on-loan Southampton striker Michael Obafemi. But with only Craig Gordon to beat, he missed. Scotland went on to win 2-1. Molumby defended Parrott.

“It was a massive moment. For me, with Troy, nine times out of 10 I’d back him to score. It’s just disappointing. We’re all a bit down, he’s a bit down, but we’ll look after him obviously,” Molumby said, as per Lancs Live.

It was a shocking miss. Parrott was clean through on goal and had all the time of the world to pick his spot. But the Ireland man could not get the ball out of his feet, and it seemed the more time he had – the less likely he was to score.

Veteran stopper Gordon managed to save the shot. It sums up his season on loan at Preston so far, lacking confidence and proving ineffective in attack. Parrott is thought of highly, and his numbers at MK Dons last term were impressive.

There is plenty of time to turn his form around. You would imagine that Preston do start to score more goals than only the three they have in the Championship. Whether Parrott can be central to that, remains to be seen.
