Report: West Ham already plan £12m January bid for 29-year-old, Leeds interest came to 'nothing'

West Ham United want John Egan and are already plotting a move to sign the Sheffield United defender in the January transfer window.

David Moyes must have seen something he didn’t really like in West Ham’s back line.

Moyes not only brought in two new centre backs in Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer, but also a new left back in Emerson Palmieri.

The Scot still wanted more and was chasing another centre back before the transfer deadline, with the idea of replacing Craig Dawson.

Dawson’s late move to Wolverhampton Wanderers fell through, meaning West Ham didn’t make that signing – but it could still come in January.

West Ham United want John Egan

The Sun report that West Ham are preparing to make a £12million move for Sheffield United defender John Egan in January.

It’s stated that Egan was one of the top targets for Moyes during the summer window, but the Blades refused to strike a deal.

West Ham now plan to revisit a move for Egan in January in the hope of finally tempting Paul Heckingbottom’s men into a move.

That still doesn’t feel particularly likely though.

It looked like the Blades will be in the Championship promotion mix and selling their best defender just wouldn’t make sense.

Egan is though out of contract in 2024 and turns 30 in October, so this may be the last chance to cash in for considerable money.

Leeds United were thought to be very interested in signing Egan before the transfer deadline.

However, boss Heckingbottom – formerly of Leeds himself – suggested that the Blades heard nothing from Jesse Marsch’s side.

That was ideal for Sheffield United, who were able to keep their vice-captain and continue to push towards promotion.

Any move for Egan certainly won’t be welcomed at Bramall Lane come January, and Moyes may well find that his interest in the Ireland international is stonewalled once again.
