USWNT closes October window with shutout win over Colombia

The U.S. women’s national team looked to be staring a second-straight goal-less draw in the face on Sunday night in San Diego but a strong second-half performance helped Twila Kilgore’s squad end their October window on a winning note.

Mia Fishel and Jaedyn Shaw both scored their first senior USWNT goals while Lindsey Horan also found the back of the net in a 3-0 triumph over Colombia. The USWNT’s regulation unbeaten streak was extended to 17 matches in the process heading into December friendlies against China.

Following a goal-less first half at Snapdragon Stadium, the inclusions of both Fishel and Shaw into the USWNT squad certainly played a difference.

Fishel’s close-range header in the 56th minute boosted the Americans in front 1-0 after Emily Sonnett’s cross was finished home. It marked Fishel’s first senior goal in only her second USWNT appearance.

Horan extended the USWNT’s lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute after volleying home inside of the Colombia box. Emily Fox’s cross from the right wing was stroked home by Horan into the bottom-left corner.

The USWNT capped the final score at 3-0 in the 83rd minute as Shaw flicked home a shot into the back of the net. Alyssa Thompson’s through-ball pass was gathered by Shaw before the 18-year-old calmly slotted home.

Shaw, who plays professional with the NWSL’s San Diego Wave, featured at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup last year.

Casey Murphy registered a two-save clean sheet for the USWNT, which was its sixth-consecutive shutout dating back to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The USWNT will close out its 2023 schedule on home soil with a final pair of friendlies against China on Dec. 2 and Dec. 5.
