‘I wish my divorce was that quick!’ – Jason Cundy reflects on crazy day for Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo that also sees Glazer look for buy

Jason Cundy believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United exit and the Glazer family looking to sell the club added to what was one of football’s most eventful days. After Argentina began the day with a shock loss to Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo and the American owners closed it with a bang. Ronaldo’s days at Manchester United are over after leaving the club by mutual consentGetty Meanwhile the Glazer family have signaled their intentions to sell the clubgetty First the Premier League side announced Ronaldo had left the club with immediate effect following his explosive comments in his interview with Piers Morgan. Then it emerged their American owners were looking for buyers after 17 years in charge, with the prospect of a deal being ‘very real’, talkSPORT understands. “This is one of the biggest football days, story-wise. I can’t think of a bigger day,” Cundy told the Sports Bar listeners on Tuesday evening as he tried to catch his breath. “Argentina lose to Saudi Arabia, they haven’t lost for like 1000 games [34 for those who like to take things literally] and lose their first game in the World Cup. Fast-forward a couple of hours and Ronaldo has left United. Not ‘might be’, he’s left, he’s gone. He’s single, everyone else is married and he’s single. Then a couple of hours later the Glazers are selling United. Cundy was full of praise for how United have handled the situationGetty Most read in Football latest Man United FOR SALE: Glazers willing to sell Red Devils as club confirm possibility CLOSER Bournemouth to appoint O'Neil as permanent head coach gone Ronaldo leaves Man United: Portugal icon sends message to fans, club release statement ARABIAN NIGHTMARE Argentina 1-2 Saudi Arabia: Messi and co stunned in huge World Cup shock CRASH Saudi goalkeeper accidentally KOs own teammate with flying knee in horror collision blockbuster Souness and Keane in heated exchange as legends clash over Argentina penalty “What a day of football news, it’s quite remarkable.” Asked for his verdict on Ronaldo’s exit from Manchester United, Cundy: “He [got what he wanted]. “I have to say, fair play to Manchester United as well. They may well have been in a position that they didn’t want to be in, but they dealt with it early. “Get rid, deal with it, sort this out because they did not want this cloud hanging over them in every press conference or every time there’s a Manchester United player, whoever he plays for in the World Cup, being asked about Ronaldo. “Ronaldo came out with a statement and said ‘don’t ask other players about it’, but it’s over. There’s no doubting that Ronaldo leaves the club under something of a dark cloudGetty “The divorce has happened. It’s a quick divorce – I wish I had one of them myself back in the day – but it’s a quick divorce and it’s done. “Now that they’re separated everybody can move on. He can concentrate on the World Cup, he knows he’s not going back to Manchester United. Manchester United can move on, the fans can move on, but with the Glazer family it’s like a double-whammy.” Responding to co-host Jamie O’Hara’s comments that Man United fans will be rubbing their hands together, Cundy said: “It’s enormous. “One of the biggest clubs in world football is up for sale. That, in itself, is enormous. “When the Glazers came in and bought it Man United fans will have hoped that they have the best interests of the club at heart, but they’re businessmen. United fans will be delighted that the Glazers are looking to sell the club “They came in, they made their money, it’s worked perfectly for them because what an investment it’s turned out to be. “Now they’re going to move on and they don’t care who they sell it to. They don’t care. “Whoever comes in to buy that football club, clearly, is going to have deep pockets and will clearly have a motive much deeper than just winning trophies. “It’s a business, but you just hope that they come in with the right motives, i.e. a sheikh with deep pockets, oil – someone like City, Newcastle or what they almost had at Chelsea. “Chelsea is the model. Roman [Abramovich] came in and took Chelsea from third in the table, with no title in 50 years, to winning European Cups. Cundy believes that United will need a seriously rich owner if they’re to kick on and be successful againAFP “Almost every year or 18 months, Chelsea won a title. “Manchester United are a cash cow, the Glazers have proven that. The owner comes in and the only thing that you want them to have on their mind is success. “You want them to improve the training ground, improve the ground, improve the squad and all of that comes at a price  – a huge price – in today’s market, especially at United.” Ronaldo released a brief statement, but it remains to be seen whether he will speak again at his pre-match press conference with Portugal to get their World Cup campaign started on Thursday. talkSPORT BET OFFER OF THE DAY Bet £10 Get £30 In Free Bets* – CLAIM HERE 18+ Opt in, bet £10+ at odds 2.00+, in 7 days.
