Madley steps in to referee at Bramall Lane
19/04/2024 12:36
Tomorrow’s game against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane should have been refereed by Anthony Taylor, one of the Premier League’s most experienced match officials, but he’s been switched to Sunday’s Everton v Nottingham Forest game to replace Chris Kavanagh, leaving Andy Madley to step up from his previously scheduled VAR role for our game to take the whistle.
It's some time since Madley refereed a Burnley game. We have to go back three seasons when he took charge of three Burnley games behind closed doors, the League Cup home defeat against Manchester City, the FA Cup win at Fulham and the home Premier League draw against Leicester.
His first Burnley game was the League Cup tie against Plymouth in 2012 and his next four, prior to that game at Newcastle, were all in the Championship, the win at Derby in 2013/14 when he awarded Derby a ridiculous penalty, which they thankfully failed to score from, and then three in the next promotion season in 2015/16. Of the nine Burnley games he's refereed, the Manchester City game is the only defeat.
He might not have refereed us in over four years but tomorrow will be his fourth Sheffield United game this season. He refereed their 2-2 home draw against Everton and then their home defeat against Bournemouth and their loss at Chelsea.
He's refereed 26 games this season in English football of which 19 have been in the Premier League, with two in the Championship and five in the FA Cup. In those games, he's shown 96 yellow and three red cards. Of those yellows, 42 have gone to home team players with 54 to away team players.
In his first two games this season he showed no fewer than eighteen yellow cards alongside one red which was given t Matheus Nunes in Wolves' 4-1 home defeat against Brighton. In December he sent off Jordan Ayew with Crystal Palace leading 1-0 against Liverpool before going on to lose 2-1 and his most recent card came in the FA Cup when he dismissed Callum Doyle in Leicester's 4-2 defeat at Chelsea with the scores level at 2-2.
His most recent game was that between Luiton and Bournemouth two weeks ago tomorrow. There were no cards in that game, the first time he's had a card free day since he refereed Spurs v Liverpool in November 2022.
Fourth official tomorrow is Rebecca Welch who refereed our 2-0 win at Fulham in December. Tim Robinson has stepped into the VAR role. He refereed our recent game at Liverpool, the first time we'd failed to win with him refereeing.
