Cardiff, Swansea & Stoke among clubs in transfer battle for 6-goal striker

Cardiff City, Millwall, Swansea City and Stoke City are all keeping tabs on striker Sydney van Hooijdonk who is likely to be available on loan this month. The 22-year-old, who is the son of former Dutch international Pierre, is contracted to Bologna but he has spent the current campaign with Heerenveen in his home country, scoring six goals in 17 Eredivisie games. Despite that successful period, The Sun have claimed that van Hooijdonk is keen to test himself in England and that there are four clubs monitoring him as they seek to add firepower to their respective squads before the deadline. The update indicates Bologna will be happy to negotiate with the clubs, who could take the player on an initial loan with an option to make that a permanent switch in the summer, although he won’t be available for a cut-price as he still has two years left on his contract with the Italian outfit. Plus, they add that there is rival interest from clubs in the Netherlands and Belgium, so there really is a battle to land the attacker. The verdict This would appear to be a good move for whoever wins the race for van Hooijdonk’s signature as he is a talented young striker who has very good pedigree. He has a good record in the Dutch top-flight over the past two seasons and you would think he is capable of carrying that over to the Championship. As well as that, to get him on an initial loan would make this a low-risk deal, so whoever lands the player this month will be doing some smart business. Thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
