‘For Chelsea?’: Gary Lineker jokes that reported Spurs target is signing for Graham Potter’s side

Speaking on the BBC’s coverage of Japan vs Croatia (December 5, 5:50PM), Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand have been discussing Josko Gvardiol.

Gvardiol is a player who has really caught Ferdinand’s eye at this tournament, and he’s consistently been joking that he’s been doing some ‘scouting missions’ on the young centre-back.

Gvardiol is, of course, one of the most-wanted men in European football at the moment with Tottenham Hotspur amongst the clubs keen on the Croatian.

However, Chelsea seem to be leading the race at the moment, with Bild reporting that the RB Leipzig star is set for a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Having heard these rumours, Lineker made a joke on air that Gvardiol will be joining Chelsea after Ferdinand’s scouting missions.

Lineker’s Chelsea nod

The two pundits discussed Croatia’s performance.

“You have so many other players, Perisic, Kovacic, you have so many players who make you go, wow,” Ferdinand said.

“Gvardiol who you mentioned before the game too,” Lineker added.

“He did, he grew into the game too with the scouting missions that I’ve been doing throughout the tournament,” Ferdinand said.

“For Chelsea?” Lineker joked.

Impressing

While these comments from Lineker were tongue-in-cheek, you can’t get away from the fact that Gvardiol has been mightily impressive at this World Cup.

The centre-back put in a brilliant performance against Japan, while he was Man of the Match in Croatia’s crunch clash with Belgium.

If he performs well against Brazil in the next round, Chelsea and Spurs may well be joined by a few more of Europe’s elite in the race to sign this budding young talent.

Lineker joked that Chelsea are signing this player, but this remains an open race.
