Nottingham Forest are edging closer to safety after Saturday’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United and Paul Merson has delivered a relegation prediction.

Forest are getting closer to the finish line. A win over the Blades means they now need just one more win to guarantee survival this season.

The Reds won on Saturday thanks to a Callum Hudson-Odoi brace and a first Premier League goal for Ryan Yates, who was praised by Chris Wood afterwards.

It’s been a pretty turbulent campaign with Steve Cooper losing his job and Nuno Espirito Santo having to contend with a four-point deduction.

With two games remaining of the campaign, Merson has now had his say on what he thinks will happen to Forest towards the bottom of the table.

Paul Merson delivers Nottingham Forest relegation prediction

With the nitty gritty now really starting to come to the fore, Merson has predicted who he thinks will go down.

At the moment Sheffield United are already relegated, with Burnley also five points adrift with two games to play.

Merson thinks Forest will just have enough to stay up and he thinks the three teams who came down last season will all be relegated.

He told Sky Sports: “I will be shocked now if they (Nottingham Forest) go down.

“I would be shocked now. Luton have to get four points, at least four points, without Forest getting anything else.”

Forest must take things out of Luton’s hands

It would be easy for Forest to think they’re tantalisingly close to safety now and in fairness, it could be all but over before they play on Saturday.

If West Ham beat Luton at the London Stadium, it would take a big swing in terms of goal difference for the Hatters to catch Forest.

Much like Merson says, however, it would be a big surprise now if Forest end up being relegated from here.

Forest have to take the situation out of Luton’s hands and simply win one more match on their own accord.

If they do that, safety will be secured and Forest can look to draw a line under this miserable season and prepare for the next campaign as a Premier League club.
