Mikel Arteta has worked wonders as the manager of Arsenal.

The Spaniard has taken the Gunners from being top four pretenders to league title contenders, and he's got almost every big decision spot on.

However, for all the good work Arteta has done, you're always going to have your critics.

Speaking on The World Class Stamp Podcast, Carlton Palmer has been discussing one big decision Arteta has made at Arsenal, and he says that he's still stunned by the decision to replace Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya.

Carlton Palmer stunned by Mikel Arteta's goalkeeper call

Palmer spoke about Arsenal's goalkeeping situation.

"I think Ramsdale is a better goalkeeper than Raya who they have in goal. I can't believe. I don't think Arteta has done too much wrong, I know he's looking at Raya's ability on the ball compared to Ramsdale's but it comes down to possession," Palmer said.

"He should've given Ramsdale the opportunity based on last season, he should've started with him. If you're going to do what you've done, don't give him a new contract."

David Raya decision has been justified

While we can understand this argument about Ramsdale and Raya, it's hard to say that Mikel Arteta's decision has been anything but justified.

Raya is now guaranteed to win the Premier League Golden Glove this season, and you can't really ask for more than that from your goalkeeper.

Yes, Ramsdale probably did deserve the chance to retain his spot as Arsenal's number one, but, at the same time, Raya hasn't been a detriment to Arsenal's title push.

Was this decision ruthless? Of course it was, but if you want to win the biggest trophies in football, there isn't much room for sentiment or loyalty.
