Rangers could have struck £2m deal for 24-year-old in 2022, now Premier League side want him for £17m

It has been a while since Rangers moved to bring in a player domestically, at Ibrox. John Souttar is the last signing Rangers made domestically and that was in the summer of 2022. Before that, Scott Wright.

The Gers have instead chosen to sign players from down south or abroad, looking to get the best value out of the market. With Rangers top of the Premiership again, you would argue they have done that.

But, with Lewis Ferguson, they missed a trick. Not our words, the words of his Uncle and Rangers legend Barry Ferguson – who said after his move to Bolgona, he couldn’t understand why Rangers hadn’t moved.

Scotland star Ferguson had broken in at Hamilton and moved to Aberdeen – after spending four years in the Rangers academy aged between 10 and 14. He starred over at Pittodrie, clocking up 169 matches.

Rangers missed a trick in not signing Lewis Ferguson in 2022

In that time, the attacking midfielder clocked up 60 goals and assists. He was loosely linked with Rangers – the team of both his Uncle and his Father, Derek Ferguson. But nothing ever came to fruition for him.

Instead, a move to Italy beckoned – a growing trend, alongside the likes of Josh Doig and Aaron Hickey. Ferguson moved to Bologna for just £2m. Speaking after the move, his Uncle was shocked by Rangers.

He could not believe Rangers had chosen not to pursue a move for the midfielder – but the focus on signing domestic talent has waned. He told The Record in his column: “It wasn’t even a gamble”.

Now, he’s proven right. Ferguson has done wonders in Serie A in an exciting side coached by Thiago Motta, which sit fourth in Serie A – pushing for Champions League qualification. His form is impressive.

New reports regarding Lewis Ferguson’s future will hurt Rangers

Indeed, it is attracting attention just two years after leaving Scotland for Italy. John McGinn’s Aston Villa are interested. Reports this week ay Bologna want a fee of £17m for Ferguson. Juventus are also keen.

Of course, this is hypothetical. Ferguson might have needed a move to Italy to really blossom the way he has done. A move to Rangers might not have given him the required platform to go on and prosper.

But, all the signs were there. It seemed like an obvious move, not just because of the blood line. Now, fast forward two years, it is abundantly clear that Rangers missed a trick – simply because of his new value.

More than eight times Bologna paid for Ferguson, they could now sell him for. A move to the Premier League, and not just any Premier League side, but one that will be in the Champions League next season.
