Report: ‘Terrific’ Newcastle star now pulls U-turn as two clubs tussle for late transfer

Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow is now prepared to snub a transfer to Hull City or Huddersfield Town. He is keen to help Eddie Howe’s side with a Carabao Cup final in mind.

That is according to Chronicle Live, which reports Darlow has told Howe that he is happy to put Newcastle above his own transfer interests. The Toon are the shot-stopper’s priority as he knows he is next in line to play in the Carabao Cup having served as Nick Pope’s deputy.

Howe favoured Darlow ahead of Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius for a seat on the bench at Southampton on Tuesday. The Magpies ace will again be in line as cover for Pope in the second-leg next Tuesday, as well. So, he could be a part of the squad if they make the final.

Darlow acknowledges that at 32 years old, a chance to feature in a final is too hard to pass up. So, the goalkeeper has now told Howe that he will do whatever is best for Newcastle in the final week of the market. He is not putting his potential playing time ahead of the club.

Hull and Huddersfield are eying moves to sign Darlow from Newcastle before next week’s transfer deadline, though. The Tigers have produced the second-worst defensive record in the Championship this season. While the Terriers sit 22nd in the standings after 26 games.

Darlow pulls a U-turn on his Newcastle exit in the January transfer window

Only basement boys Wigan Athletic (49) have conceded more goals so far this term in the second-tier than Hull (44). While Huddersfield are just one single point better off than the Latics with 26 to 25. The Terriers have conceded 33 goals but still have two games in hand.

So, Hull and Huddersfield have studied deals to lure Darlow away from Newcastle in a late January transfer. The experienced shot-stopper has only played once so far this season for Howe. He guarded the net in the Magpies’ Carabao Cup second-round win over Tranmere.

Instead, Howe has only named Darlow on the bench in three further Carabao Cup clashes. He has also named the former Nottingham Forest star as Pope’s backup in seven Premier League games. Darlow had to miss eight games before the World Cup with an ankle injury.

But the return of Dubravka from his loan spell at Manchester United raised questions over Darlow’s future. The Daily Mail reported that Darlow – who Steve Bruce dubbed ‘terrific’ – was keen on a transfer out of Newcastle, too. Yet he has now, seemingly, pulled a U-turn.
