Spanish media deliver honest verdict on David Raya after Spain's 1-0 loss to Colombia last night

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was in international action on Friday night as Spain contested a friendly against Colombia at the London Stadium.

The Gunners man played the opening 45 minutes of the match as La Roja looked to fine-tune their preparations ahead of Euro 2024.

Raya, who joined Arsenal in an initial loan move from Brentford last summer, was making his fourth appearance for Spain.

Although the 2010 World Cup winners fell to a 1-0 defeat to Colombia, the Arsenal man wasn’t responsible for the goal conceded.

How did Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya fare for Spain against Colombia?

The Arsenal ace enjoyed a fairly quiet evening whilst on shift, and the Spanish press was quietly impressed with his efforts.

Marca gave Raya a 6 out of 10 rating as they suggested the Gunners man has what it takes to make it difficult for Spain first-choice Unai Simon.

‘He had a good opportunity to try to make it difficult for Unai Simon,’ they wrote.

‘He dealt with Colombia’s two shots well and without problems in the first half. Replaced at half-time by Remiro.’

Fellow Spanish outlet Sport also gave Raya a 6 out of 10 rating, writing: ‘The Arsenal goalkeeper lived very comfortably.

‘He only had to intervene in two long-range shots that he saved without problems before being substituted at half-time. In the game he proved to be precise with his feet.’

David Raya impressing at Arsenal

Last summer, Arsenal signed Raya on an initial £3million loan deal from Brentford, with a £27million option to buy.

This was a somewhat surprising decision as the Gunners had Aaron Ramsdale doing well in goal.

And even more surprisingly, Mikel Arteta opted to replace Ramsdale with Raya when the former was seemingly doing no wrong.

Although the Spaniard has had some shaky moments at times this season, by and large he has been very impressive for Arsenal.

Let’s see whether Raya can now do for his nation what he has done at his club, namely leapfrog the incumbent and before first-choice.
