Chelsea have had many difficult moments during these past few years and fans are waiting for a change.

Whether you think it's the fault of the ownership or the manager Mauricio Pochettino, the performances out on the pitch simply haven't been good enough.

It's crazy to think that, only as far back as 2021, this club was winning the Champions League under the stewardship of Thomas Tuchel.

That was Roman Abramovich's parting gift to Chelsea before he was forced to sell the club, and since then, the team has declined at an incredible rate.

After spending over a billion in transfers, Chelsea have stacked their team with youngsters and only very few senior players are out on the pitch.

Well, that will reduce even further this summer when the legendary figure Thiago Silva heads for the exit door.

The 39-year-old has spent four years at Stamford Bridge, but with his contract expiring in the summer, he will depart, as Chelsea announced on Monday.

Aside from Silva, there are very few leaders at the club, if any, so with him going, a massive void is going to be left at a club that is already struggling, although they can take some hope from their 2-2 draw at Aston Villa from the weekend.

When Chelsea announced that the Brazilian is going to leave, the player himself posted an emotional video to the fans and Ian Wright described it as 'very sad', as he told Premier League Productions (29/04/24 at 2:45 pm).

The former striker pointed out that one of the reasons why Silva is emotional is because he would have seen this coming for a while now.

Thiago Silva to leave Chelsea

"A very sad video to watch," said Wright.

"He was very emotional and it's a tough one because there does come a time in your career, and he is what 39, when you start to feel this is winding out and I feel it. That day is coming and that has, obviously, happened to him.

"Him announcing it, it's very emotional because he knew it was coming and now he has to put it out there. What was really quite sad to watch was how he couldn't control the fact that he has accepted it in himself, and you see him in tears. It is sad. It's sad to see because a great career is winding down."

Chelsea without Thiago Silva

A lot of money has been spent on the squad and what's crazy is that the feeling is more money needs to be splashed.

That comes down to very poor recruitment and certain transfer strategies just not working out.

But with Silva heading for the exit door, an experienced head needs to come in for next season.

A number of these players have proven this season that they aren't ready to deal with the pressure that comes with this club and that a cool head is required.

So, it will be interesting to see how Chelsea deal with this because if you could clone a young version of Silva eleven times over, then you would do it.
