Stevenage have seen manager Steve Evans depart with immediate effect to take up the newly-vacant role as Rotherham United boss.

Stevenage have risen from League Two to the top half of League One under Evans but going forward, they’ll have to fare without the experienced manager.

Rotherham United announced the departure of Leam Richardson this morning and just a matter of hours later, Evans has taken the reins at the Championship club as they prepare to drop to the third-tier.

Alex Revell will lead Boro until the end of the season, but a new permanent boss will be needed.

With that said, here are three managers Stevenage should set their sights on…

Gareth Ainsworth

Ainsworth endured a tough time in charge of QPR but he could be a great option for Stevenage. He works well under a tight budget and like Evans, he’s good at getting the best out of what he’s got and building an affiliation with fans.

Time will tell just when he returns to the dugout after his Loftus Road struggles but his Wycombe Wanderers success must not be forgotten. It could make him a good fit for the Boro job.

Mark Kennedy

47-year-old Kennedy has been without a job since leaving Lincoln City last October. The former Ipswich Town and Birmingham City coach did fairly well at Sincil Bank and would be a solid option for a third-tier side in need of a manager.

His time from previous clubs such as Ipswich, Manchester City, Wolves and more means he has good connections in the game. They could be of use ahead of an important summer window for Stevenage.

Who is this?

Derek Adams

Last but not least is Scotsman Adams, who is an experienced operator in the Football League. He saw a brief third spell at Ross County come to an end in February and may well return to the EFL for his next job.

Adams has won promotion from League Two on two occasions. His best work came in spells at Plymouth Argyle and Morecambe.
