The72’s writers offer their Barnsley vs Northampton Town prediction ahead of the League One clash on Saturday.

Barnsley have parted company with Neill Collins this week. The Tykes have placed Martin Devaney in interim charge as they hunt for a permanent manager.

They have been in poor form and risk dropping out of the play-offs on the final day. The Yorkshire club are currently sat in 5th place in the table.

Barnsley were beaten 3-2 away at Blackpool last time out. John McAtee and Adam Phillips scored their goals at Bloomfield Road.

As for Northampton Town, they don’t have anything to play for now. They were promoted from League Two last year and have adapted well to the step up.

Jon Brady’s side are 14th in the table and have 59 points on the board. Marc Leonard and Kieron Bowie are due to play their last game for the club before they head back to Brighton and Hove Albion and Fulham respectively.

Northampton Town lost 2-1 at home to Exeter City last weekend. Defender Jon Guthrie was on the scoresheet against the Grecians.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Harry Mail

Barnsley’s form has been awful and they have won only once in their last eight. It was a surprise to see Neill Collins dismissed but he was no longer getting the best out of his players which was worrying.

“The Tykes need to win this weekend against Northampton Town and their fate is in their hands with Lincoln City and Blackpool chasing them down.

“The Cobblers have nothing to play for and have lost their last two games on the spin which suggests they are on the beach already. It will be a close one as there will be nerves around at Oakwell, but I believe the hosts will sneak over the line and get into the play-offs.”

Who is this?

James Ray

“This has the potential to be a disastrous end to the season for Barnsley. Securing a play-off spot is a must, and if they don’t expect a seriously sour reaction from supporters.

“They’ve taken action to change manager ahead of a crucial game but Northampton Town are a decent side. They’ll be a good test for the Tykes, even if they’ve got nothing to play for.

“The sacking might get the reaction from the squad needed to crawl over the line, but I really fear for Barnsley. I’ll say this ends level, putting matters into the hands of Lincoln City, Oxford United and Blackpool.”
