Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney has said Charlie Goode has temporarily returned to parent club Brentford.

Wigan Athletic swooped to land the defender on loan in the January transfer window.

Goode, 28, is now back at Brentford and it remains to be seen whether he will play again for the Latics this season.

Maloney has provided this update on his situation, as per a report by Wigan Today: “Charlie’s not in contention at the moment, he’s gone back to Brentford. It’s a personal reason, we’ll see what happens.”

Wigan Athletic brought in Goode this past winter to bolster their defensive department.

He has since made 13 appearances in League One for the North West club but may have now played his final game.

The centre-back’s contract at Brentford expires in the summer and he is yet to put pen-to-paper on an extension meaning he is due to become a free agent as things stand.

Thomas Frank’s side have a big decision to make on what to do with him next with most signs pointing towards a permanent exit.

His switch to Wigan Athletic has been a chance to put himself in the shop window. The Latics’ stance on signing him on a long-term basis is yet to be known.

Goode signed for Northampton Town in 2019 from Scunthorpe United and went on to play 45 games for the Cobblers in League Two before earning a move to Brentford.

He has been on the books of the Bees for the last four years and was part of their squad promotion to the Premier League back in 2021.

However, he has only managed to feature for the London outfit on 20 occasions and has also been loaned out to Sheffield United and Blackpool to get game time.

Wigan Athletic are comfortably in mid-table in the third tier and two fixtures left to get through. First up is a clash against promoted Portsmouth this weekend before they face Bristol Rovers on the final day.
