Charlton Athletic defender Thierry Small has emerged on the radar of Derby County following their promotion from League One, according to a report by Football Insider.

Charlton Athletic swooped to land the left-back on a free transfer in the January transfer window and he penned a short-term contract with the London club. His deal was due to expire this summer but the Addicks have activated their 12-month extension clause and have offered him a three-year extension.

Small, 19, now has a big decision to make on his contract amid interest from Derby County. The youngster made 14 appearances for Nathan Jones’ side during the second-half of this past season to help them secure their second tier status.

In this latest update regarding his situation, Football Insider claim the Rams are keen to lure him to Pride Park as they prepare for life in the league above under Paul Warne. They finished 2nd in the table behind Portsmouth.

Losing Small over the next couple of months would be a blow for Charlton Athletic as they gear up for the next campaign.

The Addicks threw him a lifeline this past winter after he left Southampton by mutual consent and gave him a platform to get some regular game time under his belt in the Football League.

The teenager has a bright future ahead of him in the game and boosts the Addicks’ defensive department.

He was on the books at West Brom and Everton as a youngster before the Saints snapped him up in 2021.

Small went on to make one first-team appearance for his previous club and was loaned out to Port Vale and St Mirren to get some experience under his belt before heading out the exit door on a permanent basis.

Upon sealing his switch to the Addicks, Small told their website: "I'm so happy that the deal is done and I'm excited and optimistic for the future now.

"I'm an explosive player who likes to get at people one-on-one. I'm also very passionate and you'll see a lot of character and a lot of fight. I'll give everything I can when I'm on the pitch to make sure the fans get a good performance."

What next for Charlton Athletic and Derby County?

Charlton Athletic ended last term in decent form and Jones made them hard to beat so they will be confident heading into next season.

As for Derby County, they will be eager to bolster their ranks to ensure that they can be competitive at Championship level.

Small needs to weigh up what would be the best move for his career at this stage, staying at The Valley or moving for a new challenge at Pride Park.
