Charlton Athletic technical director Andy Scott has said Thierry Small has been offered a new ‘long-term’ contract.

Charlton Athletic have lodged fresh terms to the defender as they look to keep hold of him.

Small, 19, joined the League One side this past winter and has since made a positive impression.

Scott has said, as per a report by London News Online: “I’ve had a couple of conversations with his agents and we’ve made him a new offer, a long-term deal that he and his agents are considering. If that doesn’t happen by the time we need to activate the option then we will activate it and continue those negotiations.”

Keeping hold of Small would be a big boost for Charlton Athletic as they head into next season.

Nathan Jones will be looking to have his Addicks side competing at the top end of the table.

He worked with Small at Southampton and decided to lure him to The Valley in early February to bolster his defensive departure.

The teenager only penned a deal until the summer though, with the club holding the option to keep hold of him for a further 12 months.

Small has made 14 league appearances for Charlton Athletic since his move and has helped them rise away from relegation danger in the third tier.

He was on the books at West Brom and Everton before moving down south when Southampton came calling.

The Solihull-born man went on to play once for the first-team at St Mary’s and was loaned out to Port Vale and St Mirren to get some experience under his belt.

He spent the first-half of this campaign with the latter in the Scottish Premiership and played six matches before heading back to his parent club in January.

Southampton then cut ties with him permanently by mutual consent and he has since made Charlton Athletic his home.

They lost away at Wycombe Wanderers over the weekend and are now planning for next term as they aim to retain the services of Small.
