Former Wigan Athletic chairman set to land key Bradford City role

Bradford City are set to name former Wigan Athletic chairman and Mansfield Town CEO David Sharpe as their head of recruitment, according to Football Insider.

Bradford City will be determined to kick on in the 2024/25 campaign after their struggles in the current season. And, they could welcome a new key figure onboard for the recovery mission with ex-Wigan Athletic and Mansfield Town chief Sharpe close to joining.

The Bantams are 14th in the League Two table, far clear of the relegation fight but eight points off 7th.

It means fourth-tier football almost certainly awaits them next season. Graham Alexander will be hoping to lead a turnaround at Valley Parade, and 32-year-old Sharpe could have a key role in helping him.

Football Insider reports that he is close to being named as Bradford City‘s new head of recruitment.

It marks a first return to the game since exiting Mansfield Town last summer after three years at Field Mill. Sharpe’s most notable work was with Wigan Athletic though, helping lead them to promotion from League One twice while chairman.

Who is this?

A boost for the Bantams

Sharpe could prove to be a valuable appointment for Bradford City. They’re in need of real direction with their recruitment as they look to push back towards the top of League Two and ultimately, up the EFL ladder again.

His work in promotions at Wigan Athletic and role in helping get Mansfield Town up the fourth-tier table makes for good reading as he prepares to return to the game at Valley Parade.

He’ll likely work closely with Graham Alexander, who will be excited to get the chance to revamp the Bradford City squad. It’ll be his first summer transfer window at the helm of the club and will hopefully allow him to a build a side that suits his play style and character preferences, in turn leading to a vast improvement on this poor campaign.
