Derby County and Cardiff City will have to discuss a potential permanent move for Ebou Adams, Bluebirds boss Erol Bulut has said.

Derby County secured the services of Adams on loan in the January transfer window and the Gambian went on to become an integral part of Paul Warne’s promotion winning squad.

The 28-year-old made 17 appearances for the Rams and established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet alongside earning himself fan favourite status at Pride Park.

His winning strike against Blackpool won the club’s Goal of the Season award, whilst his defensive displays often caught the eye with Warne’s men conceding just seven goals when he was present on the pitch.

It is no surprise that Derby County are desperate to sign the Gambia international permanently ahead of their return to the Championship. Reporter Darren Witcoop has stated that the Rams are already preparing a bid.

Now, Cardiff City boss Bulut has outlined his stance on the returning player. As quoted by Wales Online, he said:

“I congratulated him for the victory. They got promoted. He was a big part from the season and helped the team a lot to get promoted.

“New season, if we are all together here, we will see how it goes. He is still under contract of Cardiff City – he is a Cardiff City player. So let’s see how he thinks, how his manager is thinking, how the clubs are thinking – Cardiff City and Derby – and we will see.

“I think there was interest in him, very much, and they took him. But if [they want to sign him], they have to discuss with our club.”

Adams signing is a must

Adams’ influence on Derby County in their successful push for promotion cannot be understated, and with just a year left on his deal with the Bluebirds there is reason to believe that a fair deal could be reached.

The Rams recorded the best defensive record in the entirety of the EFL this campaign, conceding just 37 goals in 46 matches. The Cardiff City loanee had a big part to play in that department during the second half of the season.

Who is this?

He excellently marshalled the back four, or back three, from the middle of the park and Warne will be keen to retain his defensive set-up heading into the second tier – it is the one area of the pitch that the Rams will need little to no adjustments in despite promotion.

Adams is loved by the Derby faithful and he has admitted that it would be hard to say goodbye, so securing this move appears a no-brainer for both parties.
