Charlton Athletic technical director Andy Scott stressed the club need to strengthen across the pitch but up top is an area they have had ‘many discussions’ about.

Charlton Athletic will be looking forward to the 2024/25 campaign having made some notable strides forward since appointing Nathan Jones as manager earlier this year.

The Welshman led the Addicks away from the relegation zone with an impressive unbeaten run and with a busy summer ahead, hopes should be high for the new season.

It’s going to be an important summer though. With plenty of players heading out, new signings will be needed and if the South Londoners are to push back up the League One table, they need to get their recruitment right.

One area that has been highlighted as an area that requires strengthening is up top. Alfie May was far and away the Addicks’ top scorer, so support for him is required.

Now, technical director Andy Scott has confirmed the striker department is one that ‘many discussions’ have taken place over. Speaking to the South London Press though, the key Charlton Athletic figure stressed there’s many areas that need bolstering, not just up top.

He said:

"We need to strengthen every department. We have had many discussions about that forward area.

"We suffered in December when we lost Miles [Leaburn] and Chuks [Aneke]. Alfie was our only striker. Patrick Casey and Henry Rylah came in, so we were very short. The teams at the top have options and we need to make sure we have enough options to deal with the schedule and the demands of the games."

The supporting cast

The goals of May were absolutely crucial for Charlton Athletic as they rose up the league. As Scott touched on, long-term injuries to Miles Leaburn and Chuks Aneke didn’t help.

Loan players such as Slobodan Tedic and Freddie Ladapo struggled to have an impact too, so the Addicks’ reliance on May for goals certainly wasn’t for the want of trying.

Thankfully, academy graduate Daniel Kanu found some joy as he broke into first-team football. It will be intriguing to see how much action he gets next season with striker signings in mind.

He looks a bright prospect, as does Leaburn, so Charlton Athletic have two promising players whose development they won’t want to stunt too much.

A busy summer awaits

A new striker signing or two will be needed but there will be additions across the board this summer.

Nathan Jones will be determined to make the most of his first chance to shape the squad to his liking and the releases of a number of players paves the way for him to make some of his own signings.

While a handful have already been let go, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if some of the players still under contract are let go too. Not only does that free up gaps in the squad, but also room in the budget for fresh signings.

A busy summer lies in wait for Charlton Athletic, and hopefully it will be one that sets them up for a big season under Jones.
