Portsmouth will consider a loan exit for defender Ryler Towler this summer, as detailed in a report by The News.

Portsmouth will let the centre-back head out the exit door on a temporary basis in the upcoming transfer window to help him get some more game time under his belt. However, they would like to bring in a player in his position first before allowing him to leave.

Towler, 22, made 11 appearances in all competitions for John Mousinho’s side last season as they won promotion from League One after winning the title, six of which came in the league. He mainly provides back-up to their defensive department and could do with more senior minutes.

In this latest update regarding his future by The News, Pompey will give him the green light to join another team on loan to boost his development. His chances of opportunities in the Championship are slim.

Portsmouth consider loan exit

Loaning out Towler would be a smart move by Towler as his career could stall if he continues to wait for chances at Portsmouth. A switch back into the third tier would help him nail down a regular starting position.

He is under contract at Fratton Park until the summer of 2026 meaning he still has a future with the Hampshire outfit and could still play a key role for them down the line.

The Bristol-born man is still young and has potential to grow and develop into a solid player in the Football League.

He rose up through the academy ranks at Bristol City and was a regular for his local side at various different youth levels before he had loan spells away at Frome Town, Taunton Town, Grimsby Town and AFC Wimbledon to get some experience under his belt.

Towler also played five games for the Robins’ senior team but left Ashton Gate permanently for the first time when Portsmouth came calling in 2023.

Portsmouth’s summer ahead

Portsmouth have a big few months ahead now as they prepare for Championship football.

They need to bring in a few new faces to ensure that they can be competitive in the division above.

Mousinho’s men will be in confident mood heading into next term and will look to carry their momentum into it, just like Ipswich Town did.

They published their retained list recently and confirmed that Sean Raggett and Joe Rafferty were among their released players. There could be more departures, including Towler as they look to fix up a loan exit.
