Cambridge United boss Garry Monk has said he wants his side to finish this season in ‘strong’ form.

Cambridge United are back in action this weekend at home to promotion chasing Derby County as they look to pick up the points they need to stay in League One.

The U’s lost 1-0 away at Bristol Rovers last time out and are still not safe yet as they aim to avoid dropping into League Two.

Speaking ahead of their clash against the Rams, Monk has said, as per BBC Sport: “We don’t only want to get the points and be safe, we want to finish strong and show what we can do. Looking at the last five performances, overall across the five, you can see the level has gone right up, the mentality and everything about it.

“We’ll continue that in the remaining three games, I’m sure about that. If just get the rub of the green in the right moments, and take those opportunities, we’ll be fine.”

Cambridge United trip could be tricky for Derby County

Derby County could have done with Cambridge United being safe by the time they play them.

The U’s are desperate for points still and Monk has challenged his players to end this campaign on a high.

They turned to the former Swansea City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough, Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday boss in March following Neil Harris’ exit to Millwall. He has since won two of his eight games in charge.

Cambridge United are sat in 19th position in the table after their defeat to Bristol Rovers and they are five points above the drop zone.

They have three fixtures left to save themselves and need five points to be mathematically safe with Port Vale, Cheltenham Town and Burton Albion below them hoping that they slip up.

As for Derby County, they are only four points off promotion to the Championship. They were handed a massive favour by Shrewsbury Town yesterday after they held 3rd position Bolton Wanderers to a 2-2 draw.

The Rams are now three points above the Trotters and have a better goal difference. If they win at the Abbey Stadium, they would only need a point on the final day at home to already relegation Carlisle United to join Portsmouth in the second tier.
