Doncaster Rovers and Crewe Alexandra face off in the second leg of their play-off semi-final on Friday night, with the hosts holding the upper hand.

Doncaster Rovers clash with Crewe Alexandra on Friday night with one foot in the play-off final after their first-leg victory at Gresty Road.

The visitors went 1-0 up through star man Luke Molyneux on 34 minutes and held that advantage going into the break. It didn’t take long for Rovers to double their lead after the restart though, with Harrison Biggins making it two.

It was the perfect first leg for Grant McCann’s side and after a remarkable end to the regular season, they look to be carrying that momentum with them in the play-offs.

For Crewe Alexandra, losing 2-0 on home turf marked a bit of a disaster in their bid to make the final.

However, the deficit is a salvageable one, and Lee Bell will be determined to get every last drop out of his players to try and come from behind to claim a big win on Friday night.

The Alex had won only won of their last six away games in the regular season, though they were unbeaten in their last four with three draws.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“Crewe Alexandra ended the season in poor form and unfortunately, that looked to have carried into the play-offs with their off-the-pace performance in the first leg. It’s been quite the opposite for Doncaster Rovers, who finished the campaign as one of the EFL’s form sides.

“Having beaten Crewe that run, you have to think they’ll get the job done again tonight.

“The Railwaymen have run out of steam and Doncaster look set to march to the play-off final. After a 2-0 win in the first leg and at the Keepmoat in the regular season, I’ll say this ends the same as McCann and co book their place at Wembley.”

Harry Mail

“Doncaster Rovers have been in great form over recent times and have carried their momentum into the play-offs. Their fate is in their own hands here after winning the first leg.

“They already have a decent lead and just need to stop Crewe Alexandra from scoring here. The first goal will be massive though.

“If the visitors get it, nerves could start to spread around the stadium and it could make it an uncomfortable evening. However, I can’t see past the hosts here and I think they will have enough in them to get to Wembley.”
